About this work
A large rounded dome, echoing the silhouette of a great cathedral, rises above a loose cluster of rooftops and walls rendered in soft mauve, ochre and gray tones. A pale, glowing patch of sky sits just above the dome, while a lighter building block anchors the lower right of the composition.
Thickly textured, dry brushstrokes and scraped passages of paint build the surface into a rough, weathered impression rather than a clean architectural record, with colors bleeding softly into one another. The muted, misty palette and diffused light give the study a quiet, hazy atmosphere, more concerned with mood than architectural precision.
