About this work
A domed cathedral, seen from across a river, glows faintly through atmospheric haze at the center of the composition. Buildings and figures along the embankment are suggested in loose, warm-toned strokes, while a dark tree leans in from the right edge. The still water in the foreground carries a soft mirrored reflection of the golden dome and shoreline.
Muted greys, ochres and soft golds dominate the palette, applied in thin, blended washes that dissolve architectural detail into light and mist. The dome catches the only strong glow in an otherwise subdued tonal scheme. Loose, painterly handling and a hazy, diffused light give the small canvas a quiet, dreamy atmosphere.
