About this work
An older bearded man in a red robe and ochre tunic kneels on bare ground within a shadowed stone recess, hands clasped before him, his tear-streaked face turned upward in distress. Beside him a rooster stands alert amid scattered pebbles and a discarded hat, while a narrow gap in the wall reveals a deep red night sky with a pale moon.
Strong chiaroscuro isolates the man's lit face, hands and robe against near-total darkness, with the stone wall visible only where light catches its texture. Warm reds and browns dominate the palette, and the dramatic contrast of light and shadow, together with the man's stricken expression, gives the scene an intense, sorrowful weight.
