About this work
A young woman with a gentle, faintly smiling face is shown half-length within a large silver halo, her head wrapped in a white cloth patterned with rust-colored stains. She extends one hand holding a wooden ladle or cup, while behind her a dense, symmetrical pattern of stylized plants, birds and a small hare fills the turquoise ground.
Fine incised lines and metallic silver leaf define the halo and decorative border, contrasting with soft washes of turquoise, rust and cream across the flat, pattern-filled surface. The linear, iconographic drawing and warm-toned face against cool ornament recall traditional religious icon painting reworked in a graphic, decorative technique.
