About this work
A narrow lane paved with cobblestones and scattered fallen leaves runs between low white fences toward a cluster of monastery buildings — a red facade, a pale bell tower, and a green dome visible through gaps in the trees. Overhanging branches heavy with autumn foliage frame the view on both sides, drawing the eye toward an open gate at the far end of the lane.
Soft grays and whites in the pavement and sky set off warm autumn color — gold, orange and red foliage against the red and ochre walls of the monastery. Loose, quick brushstrokes and dappled light passages give the street a lively, sunlit atmosphere typical of plein-air painting.
