Southern grass II

Five slender figures stand in a row across the top of the canvas, arms lifted overhead in unison as though caught mid-dance, their forms loosely painted and half-silhouetted against a luminous golden sky. Below them a dense field of large orange, lily-like blooms and crossing grass stalks fills most of the composition.

The palette is almost entirely warm - amber, gold and burnt orange - with only touches of sage green in the dancers' robes, paint built up in thick, choppy strokes that catch the implied light. Backlighting flattens the figures into glowing silhouettes, producing a vibrant, sun-drenched mood.
