About this work
Seen from behind and cropped tightly, a reclining or falling figure curves diagonally across the tall canvas: shoulder and back turn into a raised hip, then a bent leg extends downward to a foot at the lower edge, while a forearm rests near the waist and the head is barely visible in shadow at the upper left.
Strong single-source chiaroscuro models the flesh in warm ivory, rose and ochre against a near-black background, with soft blended edges and smooth brushwork; the dramatic contrast and intimate cropping give the fragment an intense, introspective mood.
