About this work
A nude figure drifts on her back just beneath the surface of dark water, one arm stretched above the head and the other trailing loose at her side. Long dark hair spreads out around the tilted face, which turns toward the viewer with open eyes, while thin dark reeds or roots hang down through the water around the body.
Cool blue-greens and near-black shadows dominate the canvas, broken only by the warm pale glow of the skin catching a soft light from above. The paint is handled smoothly across the body and more loosely in the surrounding water, creating a hushed, suspended atmosphere between sleep and drowning.
