About this work
A single nude body is shown upside down, one arm bent and hand clenched near the head as if gripping something above, the other arm and both legs curling and crossing as the torso twists downward into near-total darkness; only fragments of limbs and a bowed head emerge from the black ground.
Painted almost entirely in warm umbers and deep browns against a black field, with a narrow band of raking light picking out shoulder, ribs and thigh; the compressed, tangled pose and near-total darkness surrounding it give the image an ambiguous, enigmatic tension.
