About this work
An elderly, bearded man lies asleep on a low wooden day-bed, wrapped in a heavy teal-green blanket with his head resting on his forearm. Above him hangs a large red panel carved with swirling ornament, from which several curved swords and blades are suspended; to the right a dark robe with gold trim hangs on a stand, and in the foreground a bear's head with open jaws rests on the floor like a trophy rug.
The scene is built almost entirely from deep blues and teals, interrupted by the glowing red of the carved panel, creating a theatrical push-pull of warm and cool light. Brushwork is thick and varied, dense and textured on the ornamental carving and blanket folds, thinner in the shadowed corners, giving the whole interior a hushed, mysterious, stage-set quality.
