About this work
A nude woman is seen from behind, seated on the ground with her back rounded toward the viewer and her head turned slightly to one side. Her hair is gathered up at the back of her head, and one arm reaches down to brace her weight on the floor beside her. The rest of the setting is left bare.
The figure is built from a handful of confident, economical lines in dark pencil, with almost no shading beyond the curve of the spine and shoulder blades. The paper is toned and stained with soft brown blotches at the edges, giving it a worn, aged look. The sparse, quick handling reads as a rapid life-study sketch rather than a finished work.
