About this work
A muscular man is caught in violent forward motion, head tipped back, one arm flung out and legs braced in a running or falling stance, a red cloak whipping off his shoulder behind him. Above him a shadowy mass of green foliage curves like a hillside, while below his feet a band of glowing red-orange cloud streaked with sparks cuts across the corner.
The body is lit with warm golden highlights that trace every muscle in sharp, sculptural detail against the near-black surrounding space, giving the figure a bronze, statue-like glow. The compressed diagonal composition, sudden burst of red light at the base and stark tonal contrast produce an intense, charged sense of struggle and motion.
