About this work
Two women work side by side at a cloth-covered table, kneading and rolling pastry dough; one wears a dark striped top, the other a straw sun hat and floral blouse, bent over a bowl of ingredients. Behind them a large window opens onto a green garden, with a vase of flowers on a cabinet to the left and potted red blooms at the right edge.
Light floods in from the window, dissolving the garden into soft strokes of green and white while warming the women's faces and hands in ochre and cream. The brushwork is loose and broken, built from short dabs of color that give the scene an airy, sun-filled immediacy and a quiet, companionable mood.
