About this work
Two women perform flute duets on a stone embankment beside a canal, one seated on a low stool in a patterned skirt, the other standing with braided hair and an orange bodice, her back to the viewer. Each reads from sheet music on a tripod stand, while the still canal mirrors pastel townhouses and trees on the far bank, with tiny paper boats afloat.
Soft, even light in muted pinks, greens and blues gives the scene a hushed, mirror-like symmetry, with smooth academic modeling in the figures and looser, rippling brushwork in the reflections. The mood is quiet and dreamlike, as though the music has stilled the city around the two players.
