About this work
The canvas is dominated by a deep, almost black brown mass, its surface scored with countless fine scratches and directional strokes. In the upper left, pale thin lines resembling dry reeds or twigs stand out against a narrow cream-colored strip, while a faintly rounded, darker silhouette emerges from the murk toward the right.
Built up in thick, heavily worked oil paint, the surface is incised and scraped to reveal lighter ground beneath the near-monochrome brown-black palette. The overall effect is dense and enveloping, with only a sliver of light and a few etched marks offering any relief from the darkness.
