About this work
A woman turned in profile wears an ornate crimson turban trimmed with white feathers and strands of pearls, and a multicolored beaded and patterned dress covers her shoulders. She raises a pale peach close to her face, studying it intently, her figure set against a dark red field on one side and deep teal on the other.
Thick impasto strokes build the jeweled headdress and patchwork fabric in blues, whites and reds, while the face is more smoothly modeled with warm, directed light. The sharp contrast between the crimson and teal halves of the background heightens the theatrical, exotic character of the figure.
