About this work
A cello-like instrument stands at the center of the composition, its scroll carved into a hooded face and its neck formed from a ladder-like fingerboard. Within the curved body of the instrument, two thin, huddled nude figures sit back to back as though trapped inside it, their hands and feet pressing against the wooden walls.
The scene is set within a wide, textured grey border encircled by a continuous coil of barbed wire rendered in the same fine hatching as the central image. The dark, mottled background and cramped, imprisoning form of the instrument give the print a heavy, oppressive quality suited to its role as an opening image for a cycle on sin.
