About this work
A small stone church with a conical red-tiled dome stands on a rocky promontory above a lake, its walls built of rough, warm-toned masonry. A stone retaining wall and packed earth path lead up to it, and a solitary woman in a long dark dress walks along the path toward the entrance, small against the architecture and landscape around her.
Heavy blue-grey clouds roll across most of the sky, parting just enough to let a warm, low light strike the church walls and dome while the foreground and hills remain in cool shadow. The handling is fairly smooth and descriptive, with careful attention to stone texture and the play of warm architecture against a stormy palette, producing a hushed, dramatic mood.
