About this work
A row of classical sculpture casts is arranged along a stone ledge: a draped female bust, a large stern male bust on a beige pedestal, two smaller busts on slim black columns, a headless standing figure wrapped in drapery, and a strongly modeled male head on a marbled plinth. Each rests on a pedestal of different height, color, and material, forming an uneven skyline of grey stone and white plaster.
The cool greys and whites of the casts are set against a densely textured, mottled crimson wall built up in dabbed, uneven strokes. Careful shading models the faces and drapery with academic precision, while the rough, saturated backdrop pushes the sculptures forward, lending the row a hushed, contemplative gallery atmosphere.
