About this work
An arched gateway pierces a row of old buildings at the center of the composition, opening onto a narrow street glimpsed beyond. Striped awnings shade shopfronts on either side, poles and ladders lean near the entrance, and faint figures are suggested in the shadowed passage.
Dusty pink, sage green and cream are worked in thick, dry, broken strokes that leave the ground texture visible throughout. The loose, sketch-like handling and warm, hazy light give this everyday market corner an informal, sun-worn character.
