About this work
A man's face looks directly out at the viewer, brow furrowed in concentration and framed by tousled hair. Two pigeons perch on his shoulders while he holds a pair of birds low in his cupped hands, their wings and feathers rendered in close detail.
Worked entirely in pencil on white paper, the drawing relies on layered hatching and soft smudged shading to model the face and feathers, leaving the birds' plumage more finished than the loosely sketched clothing. The effect is quiet and searching, an intimate study of a man among his birds.
