About this work
Viewed from behind and slightly in profile, a woman with dark hair swept up sits with her bare shoulders and back turned to the viewer. She holds a slim brush poised in her raised hand, as though about to touch it to an unseen canvas. Her dark, voluminous skirt spills forward, and scattered papers and books lie at her feet.
The scene is built almost entirely in warm ochres and browns, with the pale nape of her neck and shoulder catching the only strong light. Loose, dragged brushstrokes describe the wall and skirt, leaving the figure emerging from an unresolved haze, quiet and self-absorbed.
