About this work
A vast cumulus cloud dominates the upper two-thirds of the canvas, its billowing form catching warm light against pale blue sky. Below, a dense low horizon of rooftops, chimneys and a slender spire stretches across the frame, with a gilded dome visible further along, all rendered as a hazy, sunlit expanse with no figures present.
Thick impasto strokes and palette-knife texture build the cloud's mass in whites, creams and dusty pink, contrasted with the loosely brushed, shadowed rooftops rendered in ochre and grey-brown below. The handling is loose and painterly, closer to impressionism than topographic accuracy, giving the skyline a warm, breathing atmosphere of late-day light.
