About this work
Eight narrow vertical canvases are arranged side by side, each showing the same view of a soaring Gothic cathedral facade crowded with pinnacles, spires and sculpted towers rising against the sky. The framing and vantage point repeat across the panels, but the treatment shifts from pale, almost ghostly grisaille to richly lit gold and deep blue-toned versions, with a paved plaza faintly suggested at the base of a couple of the panels.
Handling ranges from thin, atmospheric washes in the greyest panels to thick, textured strokes of ochre and amber where the stonework catches warm light, giving each canvas its own time of day or mood. Seen together, the repeated silhouette and shifting palette turn the building's intricate stonework into a hushed, almost otherworldly study of light.
