About this work
The view looks down into a narrow rock quarry whose jagged grey walls plunge into shadow, their ledges and fissures thickly capped with snow. Along the top edge a line of dark fir and birch trees stands against a flat, overcast sky, marking the rim of the pit and the only sign of vegetation in the scene.
The palette stays close to greys, browns and whites, the rock rendered in short, angular strokes that follow the stone's fractures while the snow is built up in thicker, chalky touches. Light is diffuse and cold, flattening the composition into a quiet, austere study of stone and snow.
