About this work
A dozen villagers in everyday work clothes gather loosely in a mown, golden field, listening to a man seen from behind whose arm is raised mid-gesture. A boy in a pink shirt, women in headscarves, and men in caps and sleeveless shirts fill the group, with a horse cart at the upper left and a basket of vegetables at lower right. Haystacks and low village houses close the horizon.
Earthy greens, ochres and browns dominate, warmed by touches of red and pink in the clothing, applied with thick, loose brushstrokes rather than fine detail. Strong midday light flattens shadows and unites the crowd into one textured mass, giving the scene an unhurried, communal, faintly solemn mood.
