About this work
Terracotta and ochre rooftops climb in overlapping planes toward the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, its lantern piercing a pale, hazy sky. The elevated vantage looks across a dense cluster of Roman houses with shuttered windows and chimneys toward the distant basilica, with low hills fading into haze on the horizon.
Warm ochres and browns dominate the foreground, cooling into pale blue-grey around the dome, with touches of green shutters and red tile breaking the palette. Soft, diffuse light flattens the distance into an atmospheric screen, while loose, confident brushstrokes build the rooftops in broad, textured planes, giving the view a quiet, contemplative stillness.
