About this work

The figure is painted entirely from the back, standing full-length against a plain warm tan wall. Her head is turned up and slightly to the side, topped with a tangle of pink, yellow, and green blossoms mixed into her pale hair. One arm bends behind her back holding a thin pale object, while the dress falls in heavy dark folds toward the lower edge of the canvas.

Built up in thick, encrusted impasto with visible ridges of dried paint, the palette moves from smoldering rust and ochre in the dress to bright, confetti-like dabs of color in the floral headpiece. The raw, gouged texture and the figure's averted, guarded stance give the picture a brooding, unresolved tension.
