About this work
A solitary figure in a pale coat and hat leans on a cane at the railing of a canal embankment, looking out over dark water toward a stone arch bridge. Behind the bridge rises a row of tightly packed old buildings in green, maroon and dark red, their windows lit from within, with factory chimneys and a bare tree silhouetted against a black night sky.
Thick, textured paint builds up the crumbling facades in saturated greens, wine-reds and purples that glow against the near-black surroundings, while the water is rendered in scumbled dark green and white highlights. The heavy impasto and stark tonal contrast give the quiet scene a brooding, nostalgic weight.
