About this work
Feathery marsh grasses and reeds fill the lower half of the canvas, their pale and dark clumps mirrored in a band of still water below. Above the tree line, faint diagonal bands of pink, violet and ochre cross the grey sky, suggesting a soft rainbow dissolving into mist.
The composition is built from close, muted violets, greys and ochres, with the sky's colored bands the only bright accent. Long vertical strokes and scraped passages of a palette knife build the texture of the reeds, giving the whole scene a soft, dreamlike, atmospheric hush.
