About this work
A tall, largely bare tree with a few clinging golden-brown leaves fills the left foreground, a small dark bird perched on one of its branches. Below, a lone figure in a blue coat walks away down a puddled, reflective street, past a wall and receding rows of buildings under a cloudy sky.
Muted blues and greys dominate the wet pavement and sky, set off by warm ochre highlights catching the sunlit wall on the left. Loose, realistic brushwork and soft reflections in the puddles convey the damp chill of the transitional season and a quiet, melancholic solitude.
