About this work
Two tiers of built-in mail cubbyholes, their turquoise paint flaking to bare rusted metal, are set into an old brick wall; several small doors hang open, one still holding a folded paper, others showing numbered plates and dented hinges. A separate mailbox with a peaked lid is mounted nearby.
Warm terracotta brick contrasts with the cool blue-green of aged metal, both rendered in fine detail that captures every rust stain and chip. Soft, even light falls across the wall, and the meticulous realism gives the composition a quiet, melancholic sense of disuse.
