About this work
Four articulated wooden marionettes with smooth, blank oval heads hang suspended by fine strings from wooden control bars visible along the top edge of the canvas. Their segmented limbs dangle at varied, unposed angles, one figure's head tilting slightly forward while the others face outward, arranged in a loose row against emptiness.
The palette is almost entirely black, relieved by warm ochre and grey tones on the wooden bodies and thin white lines marking the taut strings. Firm, economical brushstrokes define the jointed segments of each figure, and the surrounding darkness gives the group a silent, faintly unsettling presence.
