About this work
A butternut squash cut lengthwise stands upright on a white cutting board, its orange flesh and seed cavity exposed, beside a second, unhalved squash lying on its side. A whole lime sits at the lower left, a garlic bulb and loose clove at lower right, and a small knife rests on a folded white cloth, all set on a pale grey-blue tablecloth against a dark background.
The flesh is painted in saturated orange with softer peach highlights, its seeds picked out in small dabs of cream and brown, while the surrounding whites and greys are handled in cool, even tones. Light falls from the upper left, casting soft shadows across the cloth. Brushwork is smooth and controlled, giving the composition a calm, orderly, quietly observational feel.
