About this work
A commedia dell'arte Pulcinella, wearing a towering white conical hat, a black beak-nosed mask and a wide ruffled collar, extends a red heart-shaped sweet toward a black dog raised on its hind legs; behind them a rose bush blooms against a blue sky with a pale crescent moon.
Thick, textured brushwork models the starched white costume in warm highlights against a soft blue-and-peach sky, while orange pompoms and red details punctuate the otherwise pale figure. The tender exchange between masked clown and dog, set against blooming roses, gives the scene a warm, whimsical charm.
