About this work
A single hand, palm turned toward the viewer with fingers held close together, is pressed flat against a dark surface, its lower edge cut off as if seen through a narrow opening. Behind it a rough, striped band suggests folds of drapery or radiating light, while the rest of the background dissolves into near-total darkness.
The hand is painted in hot oranges, reds and ochres built up with a heavily textured, almost scorched surface, set against flat black that swallows the rest of the composition. The scraped, encrusted paint and stark color contrast give the gesture a charged, almost votive intensity, evoking supplication rather than a literal, everyday hand.
