About this work
The composition centers on a coastal town seen from a stone quay: potted flowers and a striped awning frame the foreground, small boats rest at the water's edge, and beyond them cluster red-tiled roofs, whitewashed walls and a tall bell tower with an open, arched belfry. Pale violet mountains rise behind the rooftops under a wide sky filled with drifting white clouds.
Built up in thick, confident impasto strokes typical of plein-air painting, the scene sets warm terracotta and ochre walls against cool blue-violet mountains and sky. Strong, direct sunlight breaks the forms into broad patches of color, giving the harbor scene a lively, sun-warmed atmosphere.
