About this work
A large nude figure kneels along the top of a dark, textured rock formation, torso and back curved forward and downward. Below, a woman with loose auburn hair is drawn into a close embrace, her face turned up and her arms wrapped around fabric or drapery caught between the two bodies, against a hazy, glowing background.
Warm ochre light from the lower left picks out the pale skin of both figures against deep brown and near-black shadow, with the rock rendered in thick, textured strokes of blue-green and rust. The handling is fluid and painterly on the flesh, becoming rougher and more abstract in the stone, creating a brooding, intimate drama between the two figures.
