About this work
A mother, father and two daughters stand close together in a snowy village lane, the father cradling a small child on his shoulder while the woman and girls hold sprays of pussy willow. Each wears elaborate traditional dress: brocade sarafans, fur-trimmed vests, jeweled kokoshnik headdresses and embroidered shawls. Behind them, log houses and bare birches give way to the gilded, tiered domes of an Orthodox church against a pale winter sky, with a second family group visible further back.
Light falls evenly and clearly across the scene, picking out the crisp textures of gold brocade, fur and painted ornament with tight, detailed brushwork. The palette contrasts deep red and gold costume patterns against white snow and pale sky, giving the composition a formal, festive solemnity suited to a religious procession.
