About this work
Tall pines frame a wide view over a lake, with a large granite outcrop carved with ancient petroglyphs of animals and boats dominating the middle ground; two deer graze near the shoreline birches beyond it. In the lower right a crouching figure wrapped in a dark animal skin bends to drink from a stream running off the rock, hidden among ferns.
Cool blues and greens of the lake and sky contrast with the warm grey-ochre stone at the center of the composition, all built up in thick, textured strokes typical of a northern forest palette. The arched top of the canvas and quiet, overcast light give the scene a hushed, timeless atmosphere linking present-day wilderness to its ancient inhabitants.
