About this work
Nine clay and stoneware vessels of different shapes and sizes are grouped tightly on a dark wooden chest: a tall grey-blue jug bound with rope, a squat rust-red pitcher, rounded jugs with painted bands, and several small cups and mugs set in front. A long wooden ladle rests across the necks of the two central jugs, tying the grouping together, while the chest's iron drawer-pull anchors the base of the composition.
Warm ochre light falls from the left across the huddle of pottery, picking out ridges and glaze-flecks in loose, textured brushwork against a softly modeled amber wall. Cool grey-blue accents in the largest jug and scattered reflections on the clay balance the earthy palette, giving the arrangement a quiet, tactile stillness typical of a traditional studio still life.
