About this work
A half-length portrait shows an old man with long white hair and a full white beard, dressed in a dark cassock, standing quietly with a distant, weary gaze. Behind him the dim interior of a church is suggested by glowing candles and the golden outline of an iconostasis, while handwritten lines of text occupy the upper left corner of the canvas.
The palette is dominated by deep browns and blacks, against which the pale flesh tones and silvery-white beard glow with soft, diffused light.
