About this work
A nude woman crouches beside a rounded pool of deep blue, bending forward to wring water from her long wavy hair held in both hands. Tall, stylized reed-like leaves and stalks rise on either side to the top edge of the panel, their forms built up in raised, sculptural relief rather than simply painted.
The palette stays close to warm ochre, sand and dusty rose, broken by patches of turquoise and cobalt in the pool and foliage, with flecks of gold leaf catching the light. Thick impasto and a raised, pulp-built surface give the panel an almost fresco-like texture, and the soft, even light lends the scene a hushed, dreamlike calm.
