About this work
A woman stands with her back to the viewer, weight on one leg, hair gathered into a loose knot at the nape of her neck. Both hands rest against the small of her back, drawing attention to the curve of the spine, shoulder blades and hips as she looks off to the side.
Worked in red-brown chalk on warm ochre paper, the drawing builds the body through soft hatched strokes and rubbed tone, leaving the paper's own color to stand for the lightest flesh tones. The restrained, single-hue palette and smooth modeling give the study a calm, classical stillness.
