About this work

Seen from a high vantage point, rows of Parisian mansard roofs, chimney pots and attic windows fill the lower half of the canvas, their surfaces dusted with snow. Beyond them a slender iron lattice tower rises above the rooftops, its silhouette softened by mist, with the low domes and spires of the city fading into the haze on either side.

The canvas is worked in dry, chalky strokes of putty, mauve and warm grey, thickened with a palette knife across the roof planes to suggest snow and weathered stone. Touches of rust and ochre warm the shadowed walls, while the sky is left softly luminous, giving the whole view a hushed, wintry stillness typical of an overcast Paris morning.
