About this work
The stone church of Noravank rises against a backdrop of layered red-ochre cliffs, its conical dome and arcaded bell tower catching full daylight. A double staircase leads up to a carved arched doorway, while low ruined walls and scattered stone blocks fill the foreground. Two small figures cross the open courtyard toward the entrance, giving scale to the massif behind.
Built up in short, textured pastel strokes, the palette shifts from warm ochre and terracotta on the rock faces to cool violet shadows in the crevices, echoed in the pale gold stonework of the church. A clear blue sky scattered with soft cumulus clouds fills the upper half, giving the scene bright, dry mountain light and a still, contemplative calm.
