About this work
The canvas is filled with no recognizable objects, only dense, overlapping fields of dark color that open toward a bright, cloud-like patch of pale cream and gold near the middle. Thin scratched lines and small warm flecks of red and ochre break through the surrounding darkness at the lower edges.
Thick impasto in indigo, violet-black and slate is scraped, dragged and layered to build a heavily textured surface, while the central area is built from softer, powdery whites and yellows. The interplay of rough, worked darkness against the glowing pale center produces a mysterious, almost weather-like sense of light breaking through storm.
