About this work
Seated on a wooden chair, a woman in a loose red sweater and mustard skirt clasps her hands over a dark rounded form in her lap while tilting her head back and to the side; behind her a tarnished mirror doubles her pose, and to the right a glass oil lamp rests on a dark shelf. Her bare legs end in worn pale slippers, the room fading into near-black shadow.
Rendered in oil on canvas with a narrow, warm palette of ochre, rust red and deep brown against near-black shadow, light falls selectively on face, hands and lamp glass while everything else recedes. The elongated proportions give the figure a stylized weight, and the mirrored double intensifies a hushed mood.
