About this work
The composition looks down over the sweeping colonnade and dome of a cathedral, a canal curving beside it toward a hazy skyline of rooftops and spires. In the lower corner a woman in a crinolined dress walks with two top-hatted men and a small dog, tiny against the monumental architecture.
Rendered almost entirely in rust, ochre and sepia, the scene has the worn, gilded surface of an old photograph or fresco, with patches of raw canvas and scattered flecks of gold leaf breaking through. The muted, sun-bleached tonality and soft outlines give the cityscape a quiet, contemplative distance.
