About this work

Inside a narrow, box-like space with dark teal walls and ceiling, two halves of a carcass hang from hooks on a raised metal rail — one skinned and pink, the other showing ribs and bone. Below, several large cuts of raw meat lie piled on a wooden floor and arranged on a metal tray in the foreground, framed by two bare poles.

A cool, dim teal-green palette covers the walls and shadows, thrown into sharp contrast by the raw pink and red of the meat, the only warm note in the scene. Handling is loose and dark in the background, becoming more detailed on the carcasses themselves. The result is a stark, somber, clinical still life of butchered meat.
